The Roar of Vulcan Hear Over the Land

|
A Vulcan bomber has taken to the skies to the first time after a £7 million restoration. The permit to fly from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) completes a three-year project to make the Vulcan airworthy again. The Cold War icon landed at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire shortly after 6pm on Thursday and will now take part in the base's international air show at the weekend.

Brain Damaged Operating Systems It turns out that Windows Vista has a bug that prevents you from opening and saving a compound document file back to the same name unless you're logged in as an administrator on the machine. There's a hotfix available, which is good. The fix isn't in Vista SP1, which isn't. Obviously no one at Microsoft tested this on anything earlier than the 2007 versions of MS Office, since all the earlier versions use compound document files for storage. Or else they never logged in without administrator rights. Security. Gotta love it. |

ATTN: A Sub Either Message to ALL MEMBERS OF THE ADVENTURER'S CLUB

|
That Black Day approaches. As of this date, Saturday, September 27, 2008 will be the last night of operation of our dear Club at Walt Disney World.
Several of our band are beginning to sketch out a plan to be in attendance that night, to be there when they turn off the lights and bar the doors for the last time. As said, it is merely a sketch of an idea at the moment, but one worthy of consideration.
Ever Adventurous,
Bwana Dave.

damn... fencing is expensive! So... the initial quote to fence the new place (black 5' chain link, trenched in so the bottom 6" is buried) came it at almost $16k. I don't have $16k to put into fencing, but fencing so the dogs can enjoy it was kinda the point of getting 2+ acres with the new house. I have a fencing contractor coming out at 2 p.m. to talk to me about options, but I'm definitely open to suggestion if folks have found a less expensive way to fence effectively for dogs. Fence needs to be at least 4'6" high, 'cause the Setter can clear anything less from a standing start (I'm not sure he _would_, but he could, and I plan to continue to foster so I have to plan for security). I'd prefer a built-in barrier to digging (hence the original plan to trench and bury), but can also deal with that on an ad-hoc basis if needed (chicken wire is my friend). The other goal is to wind up with a fence that looks appropriate and is as unobtrusive as possible. I've got 2 acres of beautiful rolling land across the street from a beautiful farm. I'd really like to not obscure the view or wind up living behind something that looks like a prison fence. Ideas? Also, if you're in the Indy area, recommendations for fencing contractors would be appreciated! :-) Current Mood: tired |

Lost food At this point I think we're going to have to pitch the meat we bought last night. It's pushing towards 16 hours without power and I don't think the fridge will be cold enough. |

Metropolis Unbound Missing scenes from Fritz Lang's Metropolis turn up after 80 years, Guardian 7/3/08 The cinematic world was today celebrating the rediscovery of missing scenes from German director Fritz Lang's legendary silent film Metropolis - thought lost for 80 years, until they were found in the archive of a museum in Argentina.
Key scenes cut from the science fiction picture - either because they were considered to be too brutal or too long - will now be available for the first time since May 1927, when the original version was last shown in Berlin, where it flopped badly. I never had too much problem following the movie, though there were parts that you had to make fairly broad leaps to fill in. I figured it was just German Expressionism. Maybe yes, maybe no. I look forward to seeing the uncut version (at the proper speed, tinted, with good music). |

My Convergence Schedule For those of you who come to Convergence to see me on panels (you know who you are), here is my schedule: Thu 5-6pm A8 Fanzines Invented the InternetEverything anyone does online today was basically invented by fans in zines and apas well before most people even had even heard of a personal computer. We'll also look at some zines from 1999 and illustrate how things have changed since then. Holly Day, David Emerson, Scott K. Jamison, Greg Prickman, David E. Romm, Joan Marie VerbaThu 9:30-10:30pm A8 History of Local Twin Cities FandomWhile this may be CONvergence's 10th anniversary, the history of local fandom extends much further back. Come with us as we see just how deep the rabbit hole goes. David Emerson, Virginia Jensen, Philip Kaveny, David E. Romm, Video TeamYes, two panels in a row with David Emerson! And I get to find out who the Video Team is! And I get to cross out the period in my namecard! Thu 11:00-11:59pm A2 Loving the LoathingDo you play Kingdom of Loathing online? If not, you are missing out. Grab some meat and join us! Tamyra DeWandeler, Melissa Kaercher, Jen Manna, David E. RommIt's all ericcoleman's fault. Fri 8-9pm A4 Beyond "Weekend Update"There was a time when SNL's "Weekend Update" was our only source for sarcastic takes on news events. Now, we've got fake news in multiple media, including newspaper, blogs - The Onion, Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert, and others. What are your favorites and what makes this sub-genre so appealing to SF&F fans? Ben Ellis, Terry Faust, Paula Fleming, David E. RommWe should make stuff up. Notice that all my panels are early in the con. Friday night, I'm done. I'm not even sure how many people will be there on Thursday. Then, it's time to party! Or do Ops shifts, whichever is easier. |

Well, That Blowed Up Real Good Ok, I've now fixed some very interesting little buglets, one of which suggests that someone may have broken something else. I've asked QE to take a look.
Other than that, the fellow I talked to at Discover today claimed that there had been no fraudulent transactions on the day that I called them. This would, of course, make my reason for originally calling them non-existent, as I pointed out to him. However, logic was unable to make a dent.
I've now sent Discover a polite, but unpleasant letter. |

Just in time for Convergence *whew* It was a long struggle, but I wrestled it to the ground. Minicon 2008 Galleries finished and attached to the rest of the world. These are the same pictures from the previous announcement, but now the annotations are done. I hope... just a day before the next event. This time, cross posted to minicon43. |

A Dark Day A Comin... September 27, 2008 will be a dark day for Walt Disney World fans. Close of business will bring the official closing of "Pleasure Island", most importantly the closing of "The Adventurers' Club".
This is very sad to me. It's been one of favorite places on Earth since first experiencing it back in 1989. One of those places that instantly felt like "Home".
But now, PI will be gone, absorb into "Downtown Disney" and refilled with generic eateries and shops.. the perminate consuite will be closed.
So Adventurers, Join In...

That seven items meme From violachicaeschylus If for no other reason than he wrote the Orestia. He is the maybe the greatest of the tragedic playwrights. bonzo dog band The Bonzos were a brilliant comedy band from the 60s. The best known member (over here anyway) is Neil Innes, who you know as the guy who sang the Sir Robin song in Monty Python And The Holy Grail leonard and larry Sigh, no more Leonard And Larry. It's an indy comic strip that appeared in several gay magazines through it's sporadic history. It's a sweet, funny, insightful look at two very average gay men and their friends and family. ovff The Ohio Valley Filk Festival. I am still uncertain as to whether what I do has any connection to the filk community. I would imagine that a lot of folks in the filk community feel the same. It is still a very very important part of my life, and this is the (I think) the largest filk con in the US rock against bush Two CDs that came out during the last last presidential election. Some of the greatest punk bands banded together and tried to move voters. Great idea, and great music too. the queer old dean The words of the Reverend William Spooner. The entire quote is said to be "Let us glaze our asses to the queer old Dean" timbuk 3 A man, a woman and a drum machine. Cynicism has never sounded so sweet. I miss this band. You probably know the song The Future's So Bright. It's nowhere near their best song. |

New shoes, same as the old shoes I bought some new shoes. I'm fairly sure this is the first time in my life I've replaced shoes with exact duplicates. Normally you can't still get the same model by the time the old ones wear out. These fit fine, and so I now have exactly the same, only clean and not worn out. ( photo ) |

Crud and Injury Sometime Sunday afternoon I torqued my ankle and its slowly gotten worse. Probably planted it and twisted it and torn loose some old scar tissue... bitch and a half to walk on it.
On top of that, Sunday night, started running a fever. Nothing else feels bad. Course I've lost two nights of sleep, between shivering and pain. Aw well.
Other than that souvenier Anthrocon Rocked! Probably write up a longer report when I'm thinking clearer. |
